unChain Port Phillip

A new force in local politics

unChain Port Phillip grew out of unChain St Kilda (www.unchainstkilda.org), the group of concerned citizens who stood up to Council over its handling of the proposed St Kilda Triangle development.

In the process they unmasked a serious failure of governance in the City of Port Phillip and consequently fielded candidates in the 2008 Council elections to bring back inclusiveness, transparency and accountability to the City.

unChain Port Phillip's entry into the election changed the landscape dramatically - delivering a great outcome for a new Council, a new team and the opportunity for a new direction, not the least being good governance.

The incumbent Councillors, who stopped listening to their local communities, and who wasted our rates on grand projects, were defeated. Only one remains. Their departure ensures the return of people's right to an opinion without fearing intimidation or vitriol from its elected representatives, as we saw under the last term.

unChain Port Phillip Councillors

Two unChain Port Phillip Councillors - Serge Thomann and Jane Touzeau - are part of a new team representing of a wide range of communities, in a new loose, cooperative coalition with Community Alliance of Port Phillip and The Greens.

The policies of unChain Port Phillip, Community Alliance of Port Phillip and the Greens cover many points of similarities in areas such as environment, sustainable and sensitive development, social justice and protection of public assets. Above all these three groups have promised to revive open, honest, governance. No longer restricted by the State Government’s control of the agenda, the new Council has an opportunity to govern for the benefit of local residents and traders.

unChain Port Phillip will continue to independently serve the interests of the residents and businesses of Port Philip and support our elected Councillors. A number of exciting policy initiatives are in progress and we will progressively list our achievements.

On Council our team will stand for:
